NATIONAL MUSUEM OF SINGAPORE

A FUN ART DAY OUT FOR KIDS

THE CHALLENGE

The National Museum of Singapore approached us with an exciting opportunity to run a craft-based workshop for children during the museum's Children's Season. The workshop was to be:

  • Free for museum-goers: Ensuring accessibility to all visitors.

  • Inspired by the "Story of the Forest" exhibition: This immersive installation, created by TeamLabs, transforms 69 drawings from the William Farquhar Collection of Natural History Drawings into three-dimensional animations. It invites visitors to interact closely with the wildlife and landscapes of 19th century Malaya.

  • Fast and efficient: The activity needed to accommodate a large number of participants and allow them to take their creations home.

THE SOLUTION

To meet these requirements, we developed a squeegee painting activity that was both easy and enjoyable for kids of all ages, as well as adults. Here’s how we executed it:

  • Designing exclusive illustrations: We created 10 unique illustrations of animals featured in the "Story of the Forest" installation. These illustrations were printed on heavy-weight paper, providing a sturdy base for the squeegee painting activity.

  • Simple and engaging process: Squeegee painting involves spreading paint across the paper using a small squeegee, creating beautiful, abstract patterns. This method is quick, fun, and allows for a high turnover of participants.

THE RESPONSE

The workshop exceeded all expectations and garnered overwhelmingly positive feedback:

  • High participation: Our activity was the most subscribed, with over 200 participants each day.

  • Increased demand: The museum requested additional prints of our illustrations as the initial stock quickly ran out due to the high demand.

  • Parental approval: Parents loved the activity for their children and inquired about purchasing squeegee painting kits for home use.

OUTCOME AND FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES

The success of the workshop led us to develop and sell our own squeegee painting kits, which parents enthusiastically bought. This unexpected opportunity not only allowed us to extend the reach of our activity beyond the museum but also provided an additional revenue stream.

In conclusion, our collaboration with the National Museum of Singapore for Children's Season was a resounding success. The squeegee painting activity not only met the museum’s needs but also delighted participants and their families, paving the way for future engagements and product development.
